Opening scene
After a night of uneasy wind at Thornfield, Jane discovers a blackened brass key in the ashes of an unused hearth. Mrs. Fairfax insists the fireplace has been cold for weeks, Adele swears she heard careful footsteps overhead, and Mr. Rochester grows too interested in whether Jane means to ask questions. The key opens neither the visible schoolroom nor the locked corridor everyone pretends not to notice; danger, secrecy, and intimate desperation all fit the teeth.
