Opening scene
The frontier fortress and its ring of dead forest are supposed to be predictable. Tonight, they are not. An ash-black beacon has flared, a phenomenon known to precede the vanishing of the branded. Before the garrison can form ranks or the commanders can spin a story, the anomaly is already here, steering the night's fear and focus.
