Opening scene
During the exile, at the gates of Burgos, there rises a banner marked with a military oath that several men deny having pronounced. The Cid sees at once that this is not only about loyalty but about attribution: someone wants to fix in writing an obedience that does not yet exist. Between closed gates, fearful messengers, and soldiers weighing their futures, the banner becomes a political weapon. A standard can summon troops; it can also manufacture traitors.
