Opening scene
The island ferry leaves early, the interview starts late, and Margaret Ives sends both writers keys without meeting either of them. Alice's key opens a room full of letters addressed to Hayden. Hayden's key opens a room where Alice's notes are already filed. The biography has begun choosing sides before either writer asks a question.
