Opening scene
In the quiet coastal house, a telegram arrives confirming an arrival at the seaside resort before the relevant journey has even been announced. Effi immediately recognizes that not only has a name been set incorrectly, but also a social sequence. The postman appears unsettled, Innstetten too controlled, and Roswitha saw a trunk the day before that should not belong to anyone. The question is not merely who has traveled, but who has so carefully advanced the sequence of rumor, movement, and proof.
