Opening scene
In the middle of the forest camp a pardon document is found, neatly folded, officially sealed, and so broadly worded that it could save and betray every man alike. Karl Moor sees at once that such mercy sorts rather than forgives. Some robbers scent salvation, others treachery, and the community begins to fracture along a piece of paper that perhaps was never meant to be honoured. Those who love freedom must suddenly learn again to mistrust the written word.
