Before the forced shot is to be fired, Tell notices that the apple on his son's head is not the same one that was brought to the square earlier. The crowd sees only fruit and danger; Tell recognizes preparation. A heavier apple, differently balanced, changes the shot—and above all, the subsequent narrative about it. Someone wants not only to force obedience but to pre-regulate the heroic or culpable outcome.
