Opening scene
After a night of hard wind on the moor, a small ledger is found lodged under the broken gate between the paths to Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Its entries list quiet visits made at impossible hours, names omitted but descriptions sharp enough to wound. Heathcliff recognizes one hand immediately and denies it aloud just as quickly. The book suggests someone has been using old routes and older resentments to move between the houses under cover of weather. The moor has not forgotten, and neither has anyone else.
