Opening scene
On a snowy morning, the register Sei Shōnagon receives already records the conversations and missteps of a day that has not yet begun. Someone in the palace is using diaries to seize the order of events before they happen, doling out shame and wit as if they were merely scheduled. Sei refuses to dismiss it as a prank; she sees in it a hand that means to decide the worth of others by writing first.
