Opening scene
At the welcome feast on the Rhine, a finely wrought cup is passed around; only in the light of the hall do words appear in the metal — an ancient oath that no one will read aloud. Kriemhild recognises in it not only memory but a trial. Hagen watches too intently, Giselher falls silent too abruptly, and the cup moves from hand to hand like a verdict. Whoever can read the oath is either named within it or has already played a part in its violation.
