In the upper hall of the northern tower, a defrosted index turns its own pages and speaks, one by one, the names of Frieren's fallen companions — restoring the exact pause that preceded each farewell. Fern recognizes that those silences do not come from a book: someone is choosing them. Frieren is already walking toward the next floor.
