Opening scene
Outside the city, in the hours before execution day, an oath joining the names of Melos and his closest friend has been posted on the gate. Yet its wording has been bent — by a single, well-chosen step — away from the promise the two actually made. The tyrant's man dismisses it as theatre, but Melos feels in that one extra step a device meant to turn fidelity itself into a public amusement. What he must run for may be more than a road: it may be the true shape of the promise.
