Opening scene
On the night the spring banquet is being prepared, a waka in a hand that should never have been shown is found behind the screen within the curtained dais. The verse carries the scent of love, yet it is no private exchange: its words could cost one lady her standing and one young lord his voice at once. As Genji follows the poem back, he begins to suspect that someone is steering not the affections themselves but the order in which they arrive. Tonight, the softest thing at court is also the most dangerous.
