Opening scene
What begins as a reckless return to McDougal’s Cave turns serious when Tom hears a childhood oath echoed back from a passage he and Huck once swore never to mention aloud again. Becky thinks the cave is playing tricks, Huck thinks someone followed them, and Tom realizes the lantern marks on the wall are too fresh to belong to any old story. To get out with the truth intact, he must balance bragging courage against the real possibility that a living thief has found use for the boys’ buried secret.
