Opening scene
The river is low enough to cross and loud enough to cover a lie. James finds the oilcloth pages just as lanterns appear in the trees. The pages can save a truth no one else will keep, but every line read aloud gives the patrol a sharper target. Huck is already moving, and the river will not wait for James to finish weighing truth against survival.
