Opening scene
In Wahlheim, a package arrives bearing neither name nor seal, yet containing objects Werther has so far only described in letters: a pressed flower, a frayed ribbon, and a sketch of a window that must stem from his memory alone. Lotte does not recognize the handwriting; Albert distrusts the entire affair, and Werther himself feels simultaneously understood and pursued. Whoever knows the contents apparently also knows the way Werther elevates his world. Thus, the package becomes a test of his perception.
