Opening scene
Before Spalanzani's new demonstration has even been announced, Nathanael finds in his lodgings a small brass eye, finely crafted, a number engraved on the back. Clara considers it a poor joke; Nathanael immediately senses the return of old dread, and Coppola's name hangs in the air again without anyone having spoken it. Yet this time the eye seems less observer than invitation. Whoever sent it wants to be seen — or wants to make Nathanael look in one direction only, once more.
