Opening scene
Before noon, a sheet hangs outside Gregor's bedroom door, listing in sober columns who is permitted to enter, speak, feed, or merely observe from a safe distance. No one in the family admits to having written it, yet each new column shifts the boundary between care, shame, and dehumanization. Gregor recognizes in it not merely organization, but an administrative form of his disappearance.
