Opening scene
In the Hanyang market, salt prices begin to fluctuate strangely. People believe there is a shortage, but Hŏ Saeng sees that the ledger has emptied before the goods. Someone is twisting the ledger ahead of actual supply to sell fear. Hŏ Saeng does not intend to hoard salt; he wants to find the hand that manufactures the illusion of its absence.
