Opening scene
An old dowry chest, long pushed into a corner of the house, was found open overnight. Inside, instead of silk or jewelry, lay blueprints for armaments prepared against invasion and a draft military order without an official seal. The household members were more startled than suspicious of Lady Park; the reputation of the allies was shaken more severely than that of the enemy. Lady Park felt that she had not hidden these items, but rather that someone had deliberately left them "exposed." The power to overturn the board of war always hides first within the home, far from the battlefield.
